PDA Aviation GPS Systems
If you are looking for PDA Aviation GPS systems, then chances are you are into flying! There are many options available from panel-mount systems to portable navigation systems.
Using a PDA for navigation is a good compromise between functionality and convenience. Many people already own a PDA or organize their lives, so it makes sense to get the most use out of it. Since PDAs have made their debut, many GPS manufacturers have latched onto the idea of using them for a GPS system.
Many pilots who are looking for a portable gps system are usually renting an airplane instead of owning one. If this is the case, then adding a panel-mount GPS is probably not an option. With a portable system, you can move it from airplane to airplane with minimal hassle.
How To Choose a PDA Aviation GPS
For VFR flying, a PDA GPS system is most likely going to be adequate. When you get into IFR flying, the GPS system has to be TSO certified which means that it has passed certain FAA requirements. PDA Aviation GPS systems are not FAA certified and therefore cannot be used to shoot an IFR approach in actual IMC. To do this properly you need to have very accurate lateral guidance which is not possible with PDA based systems.
However, for general navigation in VFR conditions, many PDA GPS systems offer plenty of features. Some systems will allow you to just add on the GPS components, while others will include the PDA as part of the package.
PDA GPS systems are often much easier to use - this may be because the FAA has not been involved with certifying it. Most PDAs out these days have fairly large screens and they are touch screens at that.
Some things to consider when comparing a PDA Aviation GPS are:
- Is it compatibile with my existing PDA?
- Does it have an external power source availalble?
- Can it be mounted on the yoke?
