Aviation GPS Systems
If you are into flying, chances are you have some interest in GPS. It is the modern day version of celestial navigation. Instead of stars, however, GPS uses satellites floating high above the earth.
Comparison of aviation GPS navigation systems is critical to making the right decision about your GPS purchase. Not all GPS systems for flying are created equal and there are many features to look at. The price ranges can be quite daunting as well. In fact, some GPS units are a few hundred dollars, but others can be many thousands.
The two main categories of aviation GPS units are portable or panel-mounted. Portable GPS units offer flexibility but sometimes are limited in features. Panel mounted GPS units are more expensive, but have features such as IFR and WAAS certification. If you are an airplane renter, then going with a portable unit is probably the best option. However, if you own an airplane, and wish to shoot instrument approaches, then having a panel mounted unit is likely what you need.
Reviews of aviation GPS units are all over the Internet - depending on what type of GPS you need, there are several manufacturers to choose from. For panel-mounted units, Garmin and Honeywell (Bendix/King) are the major players. For portable versions, you can pick from Garmin, Lowrance or Anywhere Map by Control Vision, Inc.
